Do You Know What a Peaker Plant Is?

April 12 @ 7:00 pm

Dear Marblehead Friends,

Please join us for this one hour informational session about an environmental, social justice, and climate hazard that our town has invested in.

A “Green MHD” should NOT mean helping to build a new fossil fuel facility…in Peabody

Right?? That’s why we are THRILLED to host a zoom with local Activist Judith Black and the Executive Director of Mass Climate Action Network (MCAN) Sarah Dooling on Monday April 12th, 7:00PMThey will educate us on Peaker Plants. Why? Because MHD signed up on for this $85M Fossil Fuel Project to offset our high energy demands. What is more appalling than a 98% white community, destroying a marginalized community to support our unchecked energy demand? The answer: Continued silence, willful ignorance, or NOT voting in 2021. As members of PowerUP,  we understand prioritizing 21st Century Style Leadership, aka Conservation. We visualize an authentically “green” community. We honor the intersection of racial justice and environmental justice. We recognize the labor involved in each effort:  Now, we need to educate ourselves beyond the toxic positivity. Let’s get to work!

The Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN), a 501(c)3 non-profit, fights the climate crisis one town at a time, with the help of local MCAN chapters – and you!

MCAN’s role as a facilitator of municipal-level action is unique among Massachusetts environmental groups. We empower our local chapters by enhancing communication, promoting town-level projects that improve communities, decreasing climate change-causing pollution, and reducing development time for those projects. MCAN speaks on behalf of all chapters to improve Massachusetts energy and climate policies and programs.

  • Support local MCAN chapters to implement change at the municipal level. Municipalities have been the most active level of government to fight climate change on a worldwide basis.
  • Advocate at the state and regional level for policies and programs that will benefit municipalities and their citizens.
  • Facilitate peer learning and tool-sharing to effectively replicate successful programs from one municipality to the next.
  • Work with partner organizations, including neighborhood and faith associations and affinity groups, to help them take action on climate change.
